Set your face to ugly cry – in this week’s episode “An Obol for Charon”, Discovery’s most elegant soul, Saru, faces a fatal illness – the vahar’ai; the ship is held in place by a sentient orb which causes havoc to its systems; and Tilly is consumed by the fungal entity “May”. Team re:Discovery discuss the central theme of polarisation between action and surrender, whether we exist if there is no one to remember us, the “soft butch showdown” between Stamets and Reno, if shirtless Saru met our expectations and much much more. So grab a hanky and press play!
“Point of Light” picks up many threads from season one, as well as progressing the Tilly’s ghost, Red Angel and Spock plotlines. We reconnect with L’Rell and TyVoq’s man bun on Qo’noS, where holding onto the seat of power is proving difficult; Amanda seeks Michael and Pike’s help in decrypting Spock’s stolen medical files; and a new assassin is in town – Section 31 is real, and is recruiting! Team re:Discovery discuss overarching theories, question Sarek’s parenting, ask where (and who) is Sybok, and much much more.Show Notes…
Season two continues as it began with more high adventure, as the Discovery fires up the spore drive and follows a new red burst 50,000 light years across the universe into the Beta Quadrant, where they find an impossible colony! As Pike, Burnham and Owosekun go down to the surface to investigate, Tilly ignores OH&S to help out Stamets and unearths her own spooky business. The mysteries multiply, the crew’s trust in each other grows, General Order One gets debated, and the #DetmerDrift is born. Plus there’s tension between science and religion, big questions about faith, and we want Pike to be our Dad (or Daddy?) more than ever.Show Notes…
The moment we’ve all be waiting for is here! Brother is the first episode of Discovery season two, and the re:Discovery crew is here to guide you through it. In a thrilling season opener, we meet Captain Pike and some of the Enterprise crew – but not Spock as expected, which looms large. There are seven mysterious red lights blinking simultaneously 30,000 light years apart. An Enterprise officer meets a grisly end mid-mansplain. We talk Discovery’s aliens, non-humans and augmented humans. Science officer McKenzie nerds out about non-baryonic matter. And we collectively scream over the latest addition to the Discovery crew: Tig Notaro as the swaggering, sassy Jet Reno!Show notes…
Welcome to the second bonus episode of re:Discovery! We recap all of season one – a huge undertaking – and discuss it in depth. We talk Klingon hair (or lack thereof), the identity politics and trauma of the Shenzou and Discovery crews, ponder if Good Lorca still exists and much more. In the second part of the episode we cover the four Short Trek episodes and talk what it all may mean for season two. This episode contains spoilers! So please make sure you watch all covered content before listening. We’ll be back on Tuesday the 22nd of January for our first season two recap! (Which, despite Ben’s mistake, will be after the January 18th premiere, not February 18th. 😂)
Welcome the first episode of re:Discovery – a Star Trek: Discovery recapping podcast for people who don’t like recaps. Today we meet our hosts Carla Donnelly and Ben McKenzie and learn about their history of Star Trek and general sci-fi fandom – as well as what you, the listener, can expect from us with re:Discovery over the course of the show’s second season. Episodes will be released every Tuesday throughout Discovery season two.
Welcome to re:Discovery! At the edge of the universe, this podcast begins…on January 8! (We’re on Australian Eastern Daylight Time, so a day in the future for anyone listening on the other side of the international date line).
We’ll drop an episode every Tuesday; the first couple will cover what’s come before, and then we’ll start with the recaps from January 22. That means we’ll be coming out in between episodes, so you’ll have plenty of time to make sure you’ve seen the episode we’ll be talking about.
While you’re waiting for us to start, you might be interested in our other podcasts! Carla Donnelly is co-host of Across the Aisle, a performing arts review and discussion podcast, with teacher and writer Philip Thiel. Across the Aisle won Best Arts & Entertainment at the 2018 Australian Podcast Awards. Meanwhile Ben McKenzie co-founded Splendid Chaps Productions with the Doctor Who fiftieth anniversary podcast Splendid Chaps, and currently co-hosts the monthly Terry Pratchett book club podcast Pratchat with writer Elizabeth Flux.
Carla and Ben are hoping to bring the same irreverence, fun, passion and warmth to re:Discovery as they have their previous projects; we hope you’ll come along for the ride!
